Writing can be one of the most difficult skills to master in the Arts. To some, it seems to come naturally, but to others it is a struggle to compose even the first paragraph. Still, even if someone does not consider themselves particularly gifted when it comes to the literary field, they can always improve with just a little help. One good way to get better is to have an essay sample.

Find a quality essay sample

Before you can begin to benefit, you must first find a suitable model to work from. The best way to find one is to go online or ask classmates (if you are still in school) for some models you can study. The most important thing is to make sure that it is a quality piece of script. You’ll want a paper that got an A or at the very least seems to be extremely well put together.

• Have someone read the sample you found

This is just to verify that you have something good because you can’t learn from it if it’s not good. However, if you are a good enough writer, you can work with a sub-par one and correct the errors that you find so you will know not to make the same ones

• Take note of the organizational structure

An important thing to note is that with good writing, everything seems to have a flow. The points are clear and concise, and usually every new point is in a new paragraph. The problem is a lot of writers tend to jumble their words, and their ideas cannot be clearly seen in their work. However, the more you write, the easier the organization will be.

• Read the paper with and against the grain

Take note of the good things in the model you found but also don’t be afraid to point out the bad things. That way you will know what you want and what you don’t want with any paper that you may write. Do not only look for the good things.

• Look closely at the word choices

There are often words used in essays that you may not notice that change the entire tone. For instance, if you use the word slaughtered instead of killed, it brings emotional appeal and adds dramatic flair to the paper. Look and see what appeals the example you are using has been making.

By working hard, and looking over the papers of others (especially if they are good), you will improve your writing in no time. Just remember that Rome wasn’t built in a day!
